How To Increase PHP Memory Limit
by swicknire on Feb.21, 2009, under linux/ubuntu
Ok, I’m sure that at one point or another we’ve all come across:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1966080 bytes)
Or some similar number of bytes, when trying to execute various web based php scripts or applications. The easiest way to change this is to drop in a .htaccess file with the following line (in your html directory)
php_value memory_limit 32M
If you have access to your php.ini file or wish to make the change that way, just change the following line to whatever Meg of ram you want. (Try 32M)
memory_limit 16M

Change Computer Name / Host Name Ubuntu Linux (8.10)
by swicknire on Feb.19, 2009, under linux/ubuntu
If you want to change the computer name of your linux box, it’s quite simple. Use the following commands to ensure the name is changed.
sudo nano /etc/hostname
And then make sure your hosts file is updated with the new name as well
sudo nano /etc/hosts
I typically use nano (pico) because to me it seems more user friendly and intutive. You may use vi or any such editor you wish.
How To Connect To a VPN using Ubuntu Linux (8.10)
by swicknire on Feb.19, 2009, under linux/ubuntu
In order to connect to a VPN you need a few things. Firstly you’ll need to install a VPN client. (Openvpn being my choice).
sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn
Then on the network icon on your task bar, right click and select “edit connections”.
Clicking on the VPN tab should now show the add/import buttons available. Click either depending on the files you were given by your system administrator (or whomever). Enter all your settings and select all the key locations and click OK when done.
Close the network connections box and then you are able to left click on the network icon on the taskbar, going to “VPN Connections” and selecing the VPN you just created. (A little lock will show up with a swirly thing going around your icon!).
Wayne’s World Vector Logo
by swicknire on Oct.23, 2008, under Photoshop
After searching the web for a good Wayne’s World logo, I came across well… nothing. I needed something that I could use in order to screen print onto a hat or t-shirt. (As Halloween is fast approaching, and I need my costume!). Buying an embroidered hat from ebay would take 4-6 weeks, and going to the mall and getting a hat/shirt done up would take a few hours at most.
I ended up taking fairly high resolution DVD cover of the movie and creating a vector from that. I’ve saved it in PDF format to ensure compatibility. You should be able to open and edit the file in Adobe Illustrator or vector editing program.
Download Waynes World Vector Logo (223KB .pdf)
Download Waynes World Vector Logo 2 Lines (244KB .pdf)
I hope you find this useful in your excellent adventures… oh wait, wrong movie. A sphincter says what?
Space Invaders Hits the PS3 Online Store
by swicknire on Oct.22, 2008, under PS3
As of October 14, 2008 the 1978 classic Space Invaders is available on the Playstation 3 online store (Japan) for about 600 yen (or $6.99 CAD). Which will likely be the $4.99 sticker price we’ve seen for other classics such as Q*bert or Joust.
It’s unknown when this will be released in the North American market, but rest assured, we will be invaded.
LBP (Little Big Planet) Delay!
by swicknire on Oct.17, 2008, under PS3
The highly anticipated game Little big planet was of course delayed due to (for the ease of understanding), muslim biblical text being used in song. (Apparently using the 2 phrases in song are “offensive” to muslims). While the song artist himself is in fact a “devout muslim”. And has won grammy awards for his music! There has been no offense taken over years of mixing the biblical text with song until this game.
So if one guy can say he’s offended for some bogus reason, the following should bring a halt to the game entirely!
Hi all, just wanted to start off by saying I’ve found Little Big Planet to be QUITE offensive. Not only to myself, but millions of others world wide.
Now this is where I should mention I’m a potato farmer. And as you all know, we tend to use burlap sacks to package our hard work for sale to consumers. We try our hardest to limit the use of burlap sacks for use only on transporting goods like potatoes, coffee beans and other agricultural goods. And during the winter we promote the use of burlap to wrap shrubbery and bushes in order to protect against the cold. But never in my wildest nightmares did I think burlap was going to be used in such an offensive and disgusting manner. Needless to say I’m appalled that our children would be subjected to such miss use and disgrace of burlap.
That’s only where it starts. As I’m sure everyone is aware that on the farm we (farmers) designate one of our children as a “sackboy”. His/Her general duties include sewing the sacks, transporting the sacks, cleaning the sacks and any other sack related jobs. And for you to outright poke fun and portray our sackboys in such a manner is just shocking. Dispite you’re hap hazard goofy portrayal, our sackboys on the farm are actually quite the opposite. I can’t imagine the loss of productivity and mental distress our sackboys and girls will go through. It’s likely to cause hundreds of millions of dollars in losses this year alone.
It’s so hard to believe that something as serious as this could slip through your screening process. Which only strengthens the fact that it was done purposely to destroy the burlap and agricultural business world wide!
I hope that this will be taken seriously, and not thrown aside like I’m just making this stuff up. It’s proven that I exist, my potatoes exist and as sure as rain, burlap exists. I can provide my PFU (potato farmers union) ID if necessary.
While I may suggest you use other materials and a name for your character… I think you will find it unyieldingly difficult to do so without offending other major industries like garbage men and grocers if you were to use something along the lines of “bagboy”. So it may be your only option to can the game entirely.
Please remember burlap for what greatness it once was until this game came along…
I hope you all understand the point I’m trying to get across. Anything can be taken as “offensive” even when its NOT. I thought that if something was offensive you just simply choose not to buy it?
Hell, even the word “sack” can be vulger and offensive. Wow, its hard to believe the ESRB missed that one and didn’t give the game an 18+ rating.
I can’t wait to see all the nasty levels people create in game that show hate towards the muslims and/or sony. What once would have been a happy game launch with everyone smiling is going to turn into a huge hate fest.
Also you have to think what the hell was going thru the minds of people at sony to make such a drastic and stupid decision to pull the game. The launch could have went off with a huge success and a minor patch and no one would be the wiser except the hard core dedicated people… in which case they would still be happy and not speak of it ever again…
But of course they were probably thinking “even bad press is good press”. Which for a game like LBP, bad press is BAD press.
Ubuntu Create an ISO image using the command line.
by swicknire on Oct.08, 2008, under linux/ubuntu
Ubuntu Create an ISO image using the command line.
If you’re like me, you have a server or other system which doesn’t have an X system for various reasons. But you want to use all the hardware and create ISO’s or burn dvd’s from the command line for backups or what have you.
In order to copy a data disk or directory I use the following
dd if=/input/file of=outputfile.iso
Ripping dvd’s
mkisofs -dvd-video -o /home/dir/myiso.iso /media/dvdrom
growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=myiso.iso

How to get FREE parking downtown
by swicknire on Jul.17, 2008, under Uncategorized
I was tired of paying $200 a month for parking (Which had just shot up another 50% to $300/month)… Daily parking spaces were about $150/month on a long term contract (And of course had a waiting list)… so like many – I’m forced to pay the $10 (now $15/day at most places) to park during the work hours.]
So one day I decided to park in a 2h parking spot and just move my car every 2h to a different spot. To my surprise parking in a different spot gets you a ticket! (apparently with the new systems they have, they do their rounds and scan the VIN/Plate of each car they pass) Each meter maid has their own method, some do it every 2nd pass on a particular walk of the city. And the electronic hand held will pop up and say “this vehicle has been parked since 00:00 and is in violation”. BAM ticket! (Granted I was on the same street, but parked 300meters away from the last spot).
$25 parking ticket later ($57 if not paid “early”) I decided I wanted to make up for this ticket and get free parking.
Luckily about 2 blocks from my office there is a casino! And guess what… they’re players rewards program has FREE PARKING! All I have to do is park at the casino (For as long as i want) and get my parking validated at the end of day.
Now these rewards programs have “points” that you collect by spending money and gambling. So far i’ve been lucky enough that I hand them my card and get my parking validated. If there are any issues with them saying “well you haven’t spend any money today”. — that’s easily solved by putting $10 down on a table game. Betting on red/black on a roulette table is pretty much a 50:50 shot. (minus the 0,00 odds of course). So via their rules all I have to do is bet $10 to redeem free parking (says nothing about losing!).
And I either walk out with $10 spent (which I would have paid for parking at some other place anyways)… or I walk out with an EXTRA $10 and FREE parking to boot.
Gotta love it.
